A Clearing in the Waves

For every truth told, how many go unspoken?

I wanted to make of these pages a book that would split open whatever parts of the world it might touch.

Let very old things come into your hands.

Let what you do not know come into your eyes.

“Blue Wave,” by Diane Sanborn

As a creative woman, I define my creative identity in the following way: After many years of painting, I have learned to engage myself in a conversation with my work and to visually listen to what the painting is telling me. Over the years I have acquired a data bank of visual information that never sleeps. When I work, I hear the voices of instructors that were genuinely interested in guiding me as an eager student. Color and composition are at the forefront of solutions to my visual problems.

AROHO is A Room of Her Own.

Our Room, Our Work, Our Way is WAVES.

WAVES is the fluid space in which we work beyond boundaries—circular, alive, and accessible to women around the globe who are themselves writers and artists. WAVES is deep and wide enough to encompass us all, past, present, and future. The invitation to practice our craft in Zoom-enabled gatherings and reflect privately on our website is constant, open, and free. In WAVES, women in all mediums and phases of artistry are called to dive in to begin again and again.

In WAVES, we intend to co-create a multimedia mother installation of the collective memory, artistry, and insight of every woman who has ever lived with the boundless longing to create. Buoyed by technology, WAVES promises to fulfill AROHO’s purpose to innovate and elevate a narrative and vision unique to creative women, curating ancestral touchstones with our radiant Anthology, newly submitted creative work, names of women who align with our purpose, Global Camp treasures, and intimate responses to The Q.

WAVES is our spirit, generative source, and steady and ongoing call. Our encounters within this space of reciprocal creation and sisterhood compose something singular and rare, the addition of each new voice influencing its shape and giving rise to its ever-changing contours. It is our evolving tribute to the enormity of what we make, witness, and inhabit as creative women.

“… in my heart [this piece] belongs to Waves and nowhere else.”

– Niloufar Behrooz
