Ellen McLaughlin
Ellen McLaughlin is an award-winning writer and playwright whose plays have received numerous national and international productions, including Days and Nights Within, A Narrow Bed, Infinity’s House, Iphigenia and Other Daughters, Tongue of a Bird, The Trojan Women, Helen, The Persians and Oedipus, and most recently, the critically acclaimed Septimus and Clarissa. Ellen is also an actor and has worked on and off Broadway as well as extensively in regional theater. She is best known for having originated the part of the Angel in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, appearing in every U.S. production from its earliest workshops through its Broadway run. Other favorite roles include The Homebody in Homebody/Kabul, Pirate Jenny in Threepenny Opera (Elliot Norton Award), Mrs. Alving in Ghosts and Agave in The Bacchae at LaMama. Her most recent publication, by T.C.G., is The Greek Plays. Ellen is the creator of and mentor for the unique $10,000 Shakespeare’s Sister Playwrighting Fellowship, which includes residencies at three geographically distinct institutions—AROHO, Hedgebrook, and the Lark Play Development Center—in hopes of spurring on an entirely new kind of play that a playwright wouldn’t have been able to write without it.
