Joan Roberts Artist Statement:
“Once Upon a Time” reflects the conflicts of a mother of grown children. A statement on the past and present.
I spent many years as a young woman in Mexico City, which literally colored my art. I was drawn to the frontality of the walls, and am constantly re-creating the dry/wet, rough/smooth, absorption/reflection in my work. I raised two children as a single, unsupported parent and artist, dedicating my time to children, making art, and supporting the family. The career aspect of my art suffered due to the “baby gap” in my exhibition record. I am working to remedy that.
