Sixth $50,000 Literary Gift of Freedom: Creative Nonfiction, Fiction, Poetry, and Playwrighting

We are excited to announce the next Gift of Freedom competition for Creative Nonfiction, Fiction, Playwrighting, and Poetry. The application window will be November 1, 2009 through October 10, 2010 (the postmark deadline for applications).
One winner in any genre will be chosen for the $50,000 grant, and a finalist from each remaining genre will be selected. The winner and finalists will be honored guests at an AROHO-sponsored Gift of Freedom event.

AROHO's Fifth $50,000 Gift of Freedom winner, Barb Johnson, has just released her first collection of stories, More of This World or Maybe Another (Harper Collins), and she's hitting the ground running. The book is a Barnes & Noble Discover New Writers title for the holiday season, and an Indie Next Notable Book. Marie-Francoise Theodore, 2009 Retreat Scholarship Recipient, reports that her short film rebel in the soul will screen at the A.I.R. Gallery in New York this fall as part of the Film/video portion of the "Mother/mother" exhibition. Created in 2003, Marie-Francoise wrote, directed, and starred in the period film about being a mother and an artist.
Rita Keeley Brown, 2007 Retreatant, whose 2008 novel A Pawn of Fate was a 2009 Indie Book Award Finalist in the Biography Category, has a memoir coming out in November. The title is Good Luck, Mrs. Brown.
Since coming home from Ghost Ranch this summer, 2009 Retreatant Shanti Bannwart won two prizes in the national competition of the SouthWest Writers: First prize in Memoir Article—"The Stillness at the End of Wanting;" and Second prize in Nonfiction Article of Essay—"Reflecting on Dragons and Angels."
Tamam Kahn, 2007 Retreatant, was invited to read her poetry in front of Morroco's King Muhammad VI at a Sufi Conference in Marrakech this past summer. Read all about her whirlwind experience on her website.
Camille Dungy, GOF Finalist and Retreatant is awaiting the release of two new books of poetry coming out in December/January: Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry (UGA); and Suck on the Marrow (Red Hen Press).
Kim Barnes, GOF Panelist, professor, and celebrated author, was recently awarded the PEN USA award for her second novel, "A Country Called Home." With characteristic generosity, she "shared with [her] fiction students the process of writing, revising and submitting a novel. I showed them every agent comment, good and bad, and each editorial rejection and, luckily, acceptance."
Karen Desrosiers, 2007 Retreat Scholarship Recipient, is on a roll, and is "launching a new venture, or adventure." She will be starting an independent publishing company called Purple World Publishing. The aim is "socially responsible publishing." She will also offer several writing contests scheduled for literary journals/anthologies. Check out her website for more information.
